8 more than twice a number is less than 6 more than the number.

This is an algebraic expression, let's take it in pieces...

The phrase a number means an arbitrary variable, let's call it x.

8 more than twice a number:
Twice a number means multiply x by 2: 2x
Then add 8: 2x + 8

6 more than the number, means we add 6 to x
x + 6

The phrase is less than means an inequality, where we set 2x + 8 less than x + 6
2x + 8 < x + 6
